Events and Updates

Read the article in the "Southern Star" about the public meeting on June 9th.

Monday, June 9th: follow-up public meeting with politicians. Again, we have invited all Cork TDs (including Ministers Batt O'Keefe and Micheál Martin, and Michael McGrath, Simon Coveney and Deirdre Clune), Senators and local political representatives to discuss the progress of the new school. The previous meeting was almost 2 months ago: what has been done since and how much closer are we now to opening the doors to the new school?
Read the last meeting's minutes here, read the article in next day's "Evening Echo" "Call to fast-track Passage school plan".
Venue: Star of the Sea Primary School. Time: 8:00 PM

Friday, June 6: Star of the Sea pupils enjoyed their "United Nations" day. Did you know that children of 27 nationalities attend the school? The day was a great success as you can read here.

Friday, May 23rd: Street Protest through the centre of Cork City as from 3:30 PM. Starting point will be Daunt Square (between Virgin Megastore and McDonald's on St. Patrick's Street), ending at City Hall. Bus transport, leaving from and returning to Star of the Sea, is being provided. Please advise the school whether you'd like to avail of the bus. Of course, you are free to make your own arrangements to get to the starting point of the protest. Children have to be accompanied by an adult and should wear their school uniform. We have invited the children and parents from Glenville Primary School to take part in the protest and we are glad, they have accepted our invitation. Together, we can make our voices heard even more!
This is what the "Southern Star" wrote: "Action Committee stages a big protest march in Cork City".

Thursday, May 8th: we are throwing a party, a family night for all pupils and their families, a 'Spraoi by the Sea', as a morale booster and to invite people to join the campaign. In the end, the campaign is about and for the kids. There will be live music, the pupils will do their "Cor Fheile" performances. Sacha Murphy, of national "You're A Star" fame, will be performing, too! We'll have face-painting and games. There will be light snacks and soft drinks. There will be a disco and lots of fun. Watch this space for further details. Venue is the "Star of the Sea" and the party will start at 6 PM. All pupils' families are invited. It's party time!

Friday, April 25: Passage West is now called 'Pre-fab City'. Read this article in the "Independent" to see why.

Monday, April 14 at 8 PM: public meeting Passage West where our polical representatives will answer your questions.
To date, most Cork TDs (including Michael McGrath) have accepted the invitation to attend this meeting. Confirmation from Micheál Martin is eagerly awaited but it seems, Mr Martin prefers handing out letters that only repeat earlier promises. Apparently, Mr Martin is running out of promises and lacks the decency to face the people he claims to represent.
The people of Passage West, however, are running out of patience!
Venue: Star of the Sea Primary School.
School will open at 7 PM and everyone (especially parents) is welcome to look around and see, under what circumstances
primary education is given in Ireland in the 21st century, when our country is facing strong competition from low-wages economies and every week Irish jobs are being lost by the hundreds to those economies.
Do we want our children to be prepared for the challenges that are ahead, or will we see our loved ones leaving the country again for employment abroad?
Check the minutes of the last meeting here.
The time to act is NOW!

Monday, April 7: the second protest was even better than the first. Again, some 250 people turned up to show their outrage over 10 years of empty promises at the expense of the children of Passage West.
With the very notable exception of one, Micheál "empty promises" Martin, ALL Cork TDs were present in visible support of our cause as were local councilors and Senator Jerry Buttimer. The press was out in force, too, and the plight of Passage West made the national news on RTE1 and TV3.
How many more protests are needed before the children of Passage West get what is rightfully theirs: a new school? The people of Passage West, however, are undeterred and more ready to fight than ever!

Monday, March 10 from 8:30 AM, parents held a picket in front of the Star of the Sea in protest of the delayed construction of the new school building. The "Irish Examiner" of March 11 wrote an extensive article about our protest. Read the full article here.

Tuesday, March 4: email from Shauna Williams, a 5th class student at Star of the Sea, to Mary Hanafin, Minister of Education, read out in the Senate.

Below some pictures of the first protest. Some 250 people turned up.
